This is the 12th anniversary of the St Mont wine festival. It celebrates the wines of the Plaimont wine makers and takes place in the villages of Saint Mont, Riscle, Termes d'Armagnac' Bouzon-Gellenave, Sabazan, Aignan, Lupiac, Marciac, Plaisance du Gers and Bassoues. There are wine tastings in the villages and at the chateaux, traditonal local meals, a medieval carnival bringing the vintage to the people, markets with local cheeses, hams, confit and foie gras and music and dance into the night in many places. Espas is a small village fete with a big reputation. Its core events are Sunday morning breakfast of snails, sausages and cheese washed down with copious amounts of wine - a very jolly affair with tables strung out down the main street. The second key event is a mass BBQ or traditional grilled lamb in a baguette followed by a disco and confetti battle.

The Festival Galop Romain allows its visitors to experience a weekend in Gallo-Roman times. There is plenty to take you back in time; chariot racing, falconry displays, gladiator school, workshops and craftsmen plying their trades from times long gone.

Price for 2 days - 6-7 euros; free for under 14s.

Festival of Comics - 01 August 2010 to 01 August 2010   Festivals

2010 will see the 19th edition of the "Festival of comics in Gascony" (La Fete de la BD) which takes place on the first Sunday in August. It is a great chance for fans of French comic books to meet writers and illustrators.

Price - entrance free.

For 7 days and nights in July, Mont de Marsan is in festival mood - tens of thousands of people dressed in brightly coloured clothes meet in the heart of the city to enjoy the music and have fun. There are also bullfighting shows on several of the days - entrance by ticket only.

Château de Lavardens
Château de Lavardens

Lavardens is an imposing hilltop fortified village. The castle attached to it was a stronghold of the counts of Armagnac. For a while the château belonged to the Marquis of Mirabeau, father of the famous revolutionary. Afterwards it fell into decay but has since been completely renovated by a private society 'amis du château'.

Open daily June-Sept 10.30-7pm; April, May, Oct 10.30-12.30 and 2-6pm. Closed mid Jan-mid Feb.
